If you sell digital products — software, plugins, ebooks, game assets, music, templates, courses, or any kind of downloadable file — through WooCommerce, you already know the problem. WooCommerce is phenomenal at being a store. It handles product listings, shopping carts, and order management with grace. But the moment you try to sell to customers in more than a handful of countries, you hit a wall.
VAT in the EU. GST in Australia. Sales tax in 50 US states. Consumption tax in Japan. Each jurisdiction has its own rules, thresholds, registration requirements, and filing deadlines. And that’s before you even think about chargebacks, payment disputes, or the legal question of which entity is actually “selling” to a customer in a country where you have no presence.
Today, that wall comes down. Fungies.io is now fully integrated with WooCommerce.
What Is a Merchant of Record — and Why Does It Matter for Digital Downloads?
Most payment gateways — Stripe, PayPal, Braintree — process payments on your behalf. But you are still the merchant of record. That means you are legally responsible for calculating and remitting taxes in every jurisdiction where you have customers. You are liable when a customer files a chargeback. You need a legal entity or tax registration in every country where local law requires it.
For physical goods businesses with warehouses and logistics teams, managing this complexity is painful but expected. For a solo developer selling a WordPress plugin, or an indie game studio selling asset packs, or a creator selling digital downloads — it’s an existential burden. Most small digital product sellers either ignore the compliance requirements (risky), spend thousands on accountants and legal advice (expensive), or simply restrict sales to their home country (limiting).
A Merchant of Record takes a different approach. Instead of processing payments for you, Fungies becomes the merchant of record in place of you. Fungies is the seller of record on every transaction. Fungies calculates the tax, collects it from the customer, and remits it to the appropriate authorities. Fungies handles chargebacks and disputes. You get a clean revenue share, no compliance overhead, and the ability to sell to anyone, anywhere, from day one.
This model is how Paddle and LemonSqueezy built their businesses. Now it’s available as a native WooCommerce integration.

The WooCommerce + Fungies Integration: How It Works
The integration is elegantly simple. Your WooCommerce store remains exactly as it is — your product pages, your branding, your customer relationships. Fungies slots in at the checkout layer, handling the payment and all the compliance work that comes with it, then fires a webhook back to WooCommerce to complete the order.
Here’s the full flow:
- Customer browses your WooCommerce store — nothing changes here. Your product pages, your design, your catalogue.
- Customer clicks “Checkout” — WooCommerce creates a pending order, then redirects the customer to the Fungies hosted checkout.
- Customer pays on Fungies checkout — Fungies handles payment processing, applies the correct tax rate for the customer’s location, and processes the transaction.
- Fungies fires a webhook to WooCommerce — a `payment_success` event hits your WooCommerce endpoint, automatically completing the order.
- WooCommerce delivers the download — order status flips to Complete, download links become available, confirmation emails go out. Everything works exactly as it always has.
The customer barely notices the transition. The tax authorities never need to know your name. And you never have to think about VAT registration in Germany or GST thresholds in Canada.

Why WooCommerce + Digital Downloads Is Such a Big Opportunity
Let’s talk about the numbers. WooCommerce powers over 6.6 million websites worldwide, making it the most widely deployed ecommerce platform on the planet. A significant portion of those stores sell digital goods — plugins, themes, software licenses, ebooks, digital art, music tracks, video courses, game mods.
The global digital goods market is expected to exceed $700 billion by 2026. Yet the tools most creators and developers reach for — WooCommerce paired with a standard payment gateway — leave them exposed to the exact compliance risks that Merchant of Record was designed to solve.
Until now, WooCommerce store owners had two options:
Option A: Use a platform like Gumroad, Paddle, or LemonSqueezy and abandon WooCommerce entirely. These platforms work well, but they take over your storefront, your customer relationships, and your branding. You’re a tenant on their platform.
Option B: Stay on WooCommerce and figure out tax compliance yourself. Hire a VAT specialist. Register in the EU. Get a US nexus analysis done. Spend months and thousands of dollars before your first international sale.
Option C now exists: Stay on WooCommerce. Keep everything you’ve built. Add the Fungies plugin. Sell globally on day one.

Who This Is For
The Fungies WooCommerce integration is built for any creator or developer selling digital products who wants global reach without compliance complexity:
WordPress plugin and theme developers — You build for the WordPress ecosystem. Selling your own plugins through WooCommerce is natural. With Fungies, your customers in the EU pay the right VAT rate automatically, and you never have to register with HMRC or the IRS.
Game developers and studios — Selling game assets, mods, soundtracks, or indie games? Digital distribution through your own WooCommerce store keeps your margins high. Fungies handles the compliance so you can keep building.
Educators and course creators — If you’ve built learning materials, tutorials, or courses and host them through WooCommerce, Fungies makes international sales frictionless. No more restricting your audience to avoid tax obligations.
Software companies (SaaS, desktop apps, scripts) — Any software sold as a one-time purchase or digital download through WooCommerce can run through Fungies. The checkout is clean, the compliance is covered, and the revenue is yours.
Digital artists and designers — Selling fonts, icon sets, UI kits, Figma templates, Photoshop brushes? Your customers are global. Your compliance should be too.
Content creators — Ebooks, music, podcasts, newsletters with paid archives — all fit the Fungies + WooCommerce model perfectly.
Setting It Up: Genuinely Under 30 Minutes
We’re not being hyperbolic about the setup time. Here’s what it actually takes:
Download from GitHub and upload to WooCommerce, or install directly via WordPress. Activate it.
Log into your Fungies Dashboard. Go to Developers → API Keys. Generate a key pair (Public + Secret). Copy your Webhook Secret from Developers → Webhooks.
Navigate to WooCommerce → Settings → Fungies. Paste your Public Key, Secret Key, and Webhook Secret. Set your Webhook URL (copy from the settings page — it’s pre-generated for you). Configure your post-purchase redirect URL.
Click “Sync Products” in the Fungies settings. Your Fungies product catalogue syncs to WooCommerce automatically. Ongoing sync happens hourly.
Toggle to Staging mode. Run a test purchase end-to-end. Confirm the webhook fires, the order completes, and the download delivers.
Flip back to Production mode with your live API keys. You’re done.

The Tax Compliance Reality Check
Here’s the part nobody talks about until it’s too late.
Under EU VAT rules (specifically the OSS — One Stop Shop regime), any business selling digital services to EU consumers is required to collect and remit VAT, regardless of where the seller is based. If you sell a $10 plugin to someone in France, you owe French VAT (20%). If you sell to Germany, German VAT (19%). If you’re a US-based developer, you technically need to register for EU VAT or use the OSS scheme.
Most small developers don’t. They either don’t know about the rules, or they figure the amounts are too small to attract attention. This is a reasonable bet for a while, but it’s not a strategy — it’s a compliance debt that compounds over time.
The UK has its own digital services VAT post-Brexit. Australia has a 10% GST on digital products sold to Australian consumers by overseas businesses, with a threshold of just AUD $75,000 per year — a level many successful plugin or theme developers cross without realising it. Japan has JCT. Canada has GST/HST. New Zealand has GST.
When Fungies is your Merchant of Record, none of this is your problem. Fungies is registered everywhere it needs to be. Fungies calculates the applicable tax rate in real time based on the customer’s location. Fungies collects it, Fungies remits it. Your revenue is clean.
This isn’t just convenience. For many digital sellers, using a Merchant of Record is the difference between being legally compliant and not.

Checkout Experience: What Your Customers See
The Fungies hosted checkout is designed to convert. It supports:
- Apple Pay and Google Pay — one-tap payment for mobile and desktop customers on supported devices
- Credit and debit cards — Visa, Mastercard, Amex
- Local payment methods — expanding continuously
- Localised tax display — customers see the correct inclusive or exclusive tax amount for their country
- Mobile-optimised layout — no friction on any device
- Branded experience — your logo, your colours
After successful payment, the customer is redirected back to your WooCommerce store. The order is already completed. The download link is already available. The confirmation email has already fired.
From the customer’s perspective: they shopped on your store, they paid, they got their file. The Fungies layer is invisible.
Open Source + Coming to the WordPress Plugin Marketplace
The Fungies WooCommerce plugin is fully open source. The complete source code is available at github.com/dukenukemall/fungies-wp-plugin. You can review exactly what it does, fork it, contribute to it, or audit it before installation. We believe open source is the right default for infrastructure that handles your store’s payments.
We’re also submitting to the official WordPress Plugin Marketplace. Soon you’ll be able to search “Fungies” directly in your WordPress Plugins admin panel and install with a single click. We’ll update this post and the docs when it’s live.
Until then, GitHub is the canonical source and installation takes under two minutes.
