One rate, not a stack of them
Stripe now has a Merchant of Record product of its own. The question is no longer whether it can file your VAT — it is what the whole thing adds up to.
Plain Stripe is a payment processor and you stay the seller of record. Stripe Tax calculates and files, but you are still the one liable. Since April 2026 Stripe Managed Payments is a true Merchant of Record — and it is priced as a 3.5% surcharge on top of the usual payment fees, with subscriptions billed separately again through Billing. We are a single rate that already contains all of it. If you sell mostly at home and have someone who handles tax, plain Stripe is cheaper than either of us.
Fungies and Stripe, side by side
✓ Us, on every sale.
You, on Payments and Tax. Stripe, only on Managed Payments.
✓ 5% + 50¢ per sale, covering everything below. Negotiable at higher sales volume.
2.9% + 30¢ domestic cards, before any add-on.
✓ Included.
Managed Payments adds 3.5% on top of the payment fee — about 6.4% + 30¢ on a domestic US card by our arithmetic from Stripe's published parts.
✓ Included.
Stripe Billing, priced separately at 0.7% of billing volume or from $620 a month.
✓ Not applicable — we file as the seller.
Stripe Tax, from $90 a month or 0.5% per transaction. You remain liable.
✓ Store builder, hosting, and your own domain are included.
Not offered. Checkout and payment links only.
✓ Sellers worldwide, buyers in 150+ countries.
Managed Payments covers 39 seller countries, and is subject to an eligibility review.
✓ Digital goods, subscriptions, games, and game assets.
Managed Payments is digital-only — no physical goods, services, marketplaces, or anything needing a human in the loop.
Stripe publishes Managed Payments as a 3.5% surcharge rather than an all-in rate, so the combined figure above is our own arithmetic from their components, not a number Stripe quotes.
Why teams move across
The bill stops being three bills
Selling subscriptions worldwide through Stripe as a Merchant of Record means Payments, plus the Managed Payments surcharge, plus Billing. Each is reasonable alone. Together they are hard to forecast. Ours is one number that does not change when you add a subscription plan or a new country.
No eligibility review standing between you and launch
Managed Payments is gated on a review of your business type and geography, and covers 39 seller countries. If Stripe later decides your product was not eligible, their docs put the tax liability back on you. We onboard you and take the liability from the first sale.
A storefront, not just a checkout
Stripe gives you excellent payment primitives and expects you to build the shop. If what you actually need is a place to sell three products under your own domain by Friday, that gap is the whole project.
When Stripe is the better call
No provider wins every case, and a comparison that pretends otherwise is not worth your time. Here is where Stripe is the better answer.
You sell mostly domestically and have someone handling tax
At 2.9% + 30¢ with no MoR surcharge, plain Stripe costs roughly half what any Merchant of Record does. If your revenue sits in one or two jurisdictions where you are already registered, you are paying us for cross-border compliance you do not need. Add Stripe Tax when you near a threshold.
You need something the model cannot do
Marketplaces paying out to third parties, physical goods, in-person terminals, live human services, issuing cards. Stripe Managed Payments excludes all of these and so do we — but Stripe Connect does not. That is the honest sign you have outgrown the category rather than the vendor.
What sellers say once they have switched
★★★★★ 4.8/5 from 10 reviews on G2 →
Vadim Finayev “We work with quite a few merchants of record, but none comes close to the support and speed of implementation of Fungies. If you want a payment partner that actually gives you the feeling they want to work with you — rather than leaving you on read for three days or randomly restricting your account — you are in the right place.”
David Elliott “I researched the options and Fungies was the best fit for functionality and customisation within a store builder you can connect to your own domain. Taking a small percentage of sales, instead of charging a subscription for every environment and plugin, is refreshing.”
Elnura Abdimanap Kyzy “The platform is user-friendly, integrates easily with APIs and webhooks, and simplifies managing digital products and subscriptions. We were up and running quickly and support has been responsive throughout. Fungies is clearly tailored to the needs of SaaS businesses.”
Francisco Magnone Rienzi “Fungies has been a great partner — fast setup, competitive pricing, and real humans providing quick answers. They are constantly rolling out new features, and I am excited to see what is next.”

You are not switching processors. You are switching who is liable.
Payouts still land in an account that is yours, daily by default. What changes is who is the seller of record, who calculates and files the VAT, and who answers the chargeback.
